Giant Panda Breeding Research Base

The place to meet giant pandas: enclosures among the bamboo, a nursery with cubs, and red pandas too. Come at opening time — by noon the pandas are asleep.

Mount Qingcheng

One of the birthplaces of Taoism and a UNESCO site an hour from Chengdu. Forest trails, Taoist temples on the cliffs and a cable car; the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system is nearby.

The largest museum in south-west China: Shu kingdom bronzes, Buddhist sculpture, paintings by Zhang Daqian and Tibetan thangkas. Du Fu Thatched Cottage is next door.

A museum on the excavated site of an ancient Shu centre some three thousand years old. Its star find, the gold “Sun and Immortal Birds” disc, became the emblem of China’s cultural heritage.

Enigmatic bronze masks with protruding eyes and sacred trees from a culture three to four thousand years old. A new hall opened in 2023. About an hour’s drive from Chengdu.

Wuhou Shrine

A memorial temple to the strategist Zhuge Liang and the ruler Liu Bei of the Three Kingdoms era. The pedestrian Jinli Street with snacks and souvenirs is right next door.

A garden museum on the spot where the great poet Du Fu lived in the 8th century. Bamboo groves, streams and a reconstructed cottage — a quiet place in the middle of the city.

Wenshu Monastery

Chengdu’s main Buddhist monastery, founded under the Tang dynasty. Its courtyard teahouse serves jasmine tea to monks and locals alike, and the refectory serves vegetarian food.
