Baiyun Mountain

A green mountain range within the city limits — “the lungs of Guangzhou”. Walking trails and a cable car lead to viewpoints over the whole city. It is noticeably cooler up here in the heat.

The largest park in the centre: hills, lakes, the 14th-century Zhenhai Tower housing the city museum, and the Five Rams statue — the symbol of Guangzhou.

South China National Botanical Garden

The Academy of Sciences’ botanical garden: a tropical glasshouse, gardens of palms, magnolias and bamboo, and lotus lakes. One of the oldest and largest in the country.

A treasure-box building in Zhujiang New Town opposite the opera house. Cantonese carving in wood, ivory and stone, ceramics and Guangdong’s natural history.

Museum of the Nanyue King’s Mausoleum

The tomb of a 2nd-century BC ruler of the Nanyue kingdom, found by builders in 1983. The highlight is a jade burial suit made of 2,291 plaques.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

A late-19th-century clan academy, now the Guangdong Folk Art Museum. Its façades are covered in wood, stone and brick carving, and its roof ridges in ceramic figures.

Canton Tower

Canton Tower

A 600-metre tower with a “waist” on the Pearl River. Observation decks above 400 metres and a Ferris wheel with glass pods on the roof. The best view of the lights is from the Huacheng waterfront.

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

A Buddhist temple founded in the 6th century; the poet Su Shi named it after the six banyans he saw here. The painted Flower Pagoda rises above the courtyard.
