Hangzhou’s symbol and a UNESCO site: the Su and Bai causeways, islands, pagodas and tea terraces on the hills. You can walk the shores in a day, and rowing boats take you out on the water. Free entry.

A web of canals, ponds and fishing hamlets in the west of the city. Electric boat rides, persimmons and reeds in autumn; the film “If You Are the One” was shot here.

A garden at the foot of the hills north-west of West Lake: a plum grove that blossoms in February and March, a bamboo garden and collections of magnolias and camellias.

A museum on Gushan Island in West Lake: Neolithic Hemudu finds, Longquan celadon, calligraphy and painting. Next door is the Wenlan Pavilion, a former imperial library.

A museum among the Longjing tea terraces: history, teaware and the tea customs of different peoples. Afterwards you can taste the fresh harvest in the teahouse.

Jades and pottery of the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu culture, whose ancient city ruins have been a UNESCO site since 2019. The minimalist building is by David Chipperfield.

Lingyin Temple

One of China’s largest Buddhist monasteries, founded in 328. On the way in is Feilai Peak, with hundreds of Buddhist carvings made between the 10th and 14th centuries.

Leifeng Pagoda

The pagoda on West Lake’s south shore from the Legend of the White Snake. Rebuilt in 2002 over 10th-century ruins you can see through a glass floor; the top offers one of the best views of the lake.
