Purple Mountain
A wooded mountain in eastern Nanjing whose slopes hold the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, a Ming tomb and an observatory. Trails and a cable car lead to the 448-metre summit.

Xuanwu Lake
A lake with five islands beside the Ming city wall. Lotuses bloom in summer, and a walk across the bridges between the islands takes a couple of hours. Free entry.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum
The mausoleum of the Republic of China’s founder on the slope of Purple Mountain: 392 steps lead up to a hall under a blue-tiled roof.

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum
The tomb of the Ming dynasty’s founder, Zhu Yuanzhang, and a UNESCO site. Its avenue of stone elephants, camels and warriors is loveliest in autumn when the leaves turn gold.

Zhonghua Gate
The largest gate of the Ming city wall: three inner trap courtyards and casemates for thousands of soldiers. You can walk along the wall itself.

Jiming Temple
One of Nanjing’s oldest Buddhist temples, dating back to the Southern Dynasties. In spring the road up is lined with cherry blossom, and the pagoda overlooks Xuanwu Lake.
