Shanghai Botanical Garden

One of China’s largest botanical gardens: glasshouses, bamboo groves, a rose garden and a renowned collection of penjing, the Chinese art of bonsai. Magnolias and peonies bloom here in spring.

Century Park

The largest park in central Pudong: a lake with boat hire, lawns for picnics and cycle paths. Century Park station on metro line 2 is right next to it.

A stretch of woodland on the Huangpu in the north of the city: pine avenues, ponds and rides for children. The place to go for a real forest without leaving town.

Shanghai Museum

The leading collection of ancient Chinese art: bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, painting and jade. The building echoes the shape of an ancient ding ritual vessel. Since 2024 there is also an East branch in Pudong.

China’s pavilion at Expo 2010 — a red inverted pyramid visible from afar. Inside are 20th- and 21st-century Chinese fine art and major temporary exhibitions.

Science and Technology Museum

A hands-on museum for the whole family: space, robotics, China’s wildlife and IMAX cinemas. The line 2 metro station opens right at the entrance, and the underpass holds a well-known souvenir market.

The Bund

The Bund

A mile of riverfront lined with 1920s–30s banks and hotels in Art Deco and neoclassical style. It is the best view of the Lujiazui skyline — especially after sunset, when the lights come on.

Jing’an Temple

A working Buddhist temple with gilded roofs among the towers of Nanjing Road; it has stood on this spot since 1216. The Jing’an Temple metro exit is right outside.

Zhujiajiao water town

An old canal town an hour from the centre: stone bridges, boats, teahouses and lanes of shops. The five-arch Ming-era Fangsheng Bridge is one of the largest in the region. Metro line 17 goes there.
