Wutong Mountain
Shenzhen’s highest peak at 944 metres. A popular weekend hike: the climb through the forest takes two to three hours, and on a clear day you can see Hong Kong from the top.

A waterfront of more than ten kilometres with cycle paths and views across to Hong Kong. In winter migrating birds feed on the mudflats, and the sunsets are the best in the city.

A waterfront building in Shekou by the Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. Inside is Design Society, with design exhibitions including ones run with London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Splendid China & Folk Culture Village
Miniatures of the country’s great monuments — from the Great Wall to the Potala Palace — and a village of houses from China’s ethnic groups. In the evening there is a big costume and acrobatics show.

Dapeng Fortress
A coastal fort built in 1394 to guard against pirates. Inside the walls are lived-in lanes, the houses of Qing generals and cafés. Easy to combine with Dapeng’s beaches.

Hongfa Temple
Shenzhen’s largest Buddhist temple, on the slopes of Wutong Mountain inside Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. One of the first temples built in China after the Cultural Revolution.
