What to do on day one
Buy a local SIM or activate an eSIM: without a Chinese number you cannot register for WeChat Pay, Alipay or delivery.
Set up WeChat and ask someone you know to vouch for the registration — without that, accounts are often blocked.
Link a card to Alipay. Foreign cards work, subject to limits on the amount.
Where people usually trip up
The number is registered against a passport, so the shop needs the original and the address where you are staying.
