Where to hold business meetings
In China the venue is part of the message: it says as much about how serious you are as the agenda does.

The options
Your partner’s office shows respect on your part and is the most usual setting for a first meeting.
A meeting room in a business hotel is neutral ground, booked by the hour, with a projector and tea. Ideal when there are more than two parties.
A restaurant is for continuing the acquaintance, not for discussing terms. Serious numbers are not discussed over food.
Tip
Book the meeting room with time to spare. Meetings here start on time but finish later than planned.
Worth knowing
Settle in advance who pays for lunch. The host pays in full, and trying to split the bill puts your partner in an awkward position.
