Registering a foreigner’s address

What it is

Every foreigner in China must be registered at the address where they actually live. The registration is made at the local police station and confirmed by a slip handed to you.

The deadline is short — a matter of days after moving in, counted from entry into the country or from the move. In rural areas it is usually longer than in the city; check locally.

That slip is then asked for almost everywhere: applying to extend a visa, opening a bank account, arranging a work permit, sometimes buying a SIM.

Three situations

   Staying in a hotel

   Registration is done at the desk on check-in — there is nowhere separate to go. The hotel passes the details to the police itself.

   Ask for the registration slip and keep it. Each new hotel issues its own; there is nowhere separate to go, even when moving between cities.

2. 2

   Renting a flat

   You go yourself, to the police station for your address. It is your job, and the landlord will not do it for you.

   The owner’s presence or their documents may be required — agree that in advance, before signing the lease.

3. 3

   Staying with friends or family

   You still have to register, and you go to the station as a pair: you and the owner of the property. They will need their ID and the title deed.

   This is the case people skip most often — “but I’m only visiting”. As far as the rules are concerned there is no difference between a guest and a tenant.

What to bring

A passport with a valid visa or stay permit and the entry stamp.

The lease and the title deed to the property — originals; copies may not be accepted.

The owner’s ID, or the owner in person if the station requires it.

A photograph to the required specification — not always asked for, but useful to have with you.
