Document translation

Not every authority accepts English — most documents need translating into Chinese.

Who translates

The authorities accept a translation from an accredited agency bearing its stamp and details. Your own translation will not be accepted, however flawless.

Requirements for the agency differ by city and by authority — check with whichever body will be receiving the document.

Worth knowing

The spelling of your name must match across every document, letter for letter. A discrepancy between the passport and the translation is grounds for refusal, and correcting it means starting again.

What gets translated most often

Education documents — for study and work visas.

Marriage and birth certificates — for family matters and visas for relatives.

Constitutional documents and powers of attorney — for registering a company and for transactions.

Medical records — for the insurer and for continuing treatment.

Careful

Some certificates stay valid for less time than translation and certification take. Plan the whole chain, not one step at a time.
